About GATE Exam

GATE refers to Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering which is a national level exam conducted jointly by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology viz. Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee on behalf of National Co-ordination Board (NCB) – GATE Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and Government of India.

Every year GATE exam is conducted by IIT of a particular state of India on the rotational basis. Last year i.e. GATE 2017 exam is conducted by IIT, Guwahati. GATE exam may be conducted by IIT, Kanpur. Now let’s look down for the details of GATE.

Note: Engineering PG Entrance Exam Dates not fixed as it is usually conducted in the month of February or March every year.

Eligibility Criteria

eligibilityCandidates who are willing to attend GATE should satisfy the following eligibility requirements:

  • Students who are willing to pursue PG courses like M. Tech or any other master’s degree courses, should complete their UG or Bachelor courses under any recognized University with an aggregate of 60%.
  • Candidates who are willing to pursue M. Phil or PhD, should complete their PG or Master’s degree course with 65% under any recognized University.

GATE Application

Students who are willing to prepare for GATE should register through filling their application form. Candidate should fill the application form carefully without mistakes. Once submitted application is taken into consideration and there is no availability of making corrections after submission. Corrections are made for the fields like Name of the candidate, DOB, Name of the Parent/Guardian, Status from General to OBC and OBC to General, Have you graduated in the above degree?, Year of qualifying degree. Submit the application before the due date of application form after making modifications/corrections.

How to Apply Online

Step 2:  Click on “Register Here” and fill the details in application form.

Step 3:  Get Enrollment ID and Login with ID & Password.

Step 4:  Upload the scanned photograph, signature and any other required documents.

Step 5:  Check the application form twice or thrice before submission.

Step 6:  Download and take the print-out of application form that is available in pdf format.

Fee

The registration fee for Women and SC/ST/ PwD candidates is Rs.750/- whereas for other candidates, it is Rs.1500/-. For International students, it is 50 US Dollars.

GATE Syllabus

syllabusSyllabus for GATE is held for 23 papers. It is difficult to provide syllabus for those 23 papers. So candidates should download the syllabus for their selected course and then prepare for exam. Only general Aptitude is common subject for all groups which comprises of Verbal & Non-verbal Reasoning, Numerical Ability and Quantitative Ability.

Exam Pattern for GG (Geology & Geo-Physics):

This comprises of three sections which include:

Section 1: 25 questions for 1 mark each.

Section 2: 30 questions for 2 marks each.

Section 3: 10 questions from General Aptitude (GA).

Exam Pattern for XE (Engineering Sciences):

This course comprises of 3 sections which include:

Section A: This section comprises of Engineering Mathematics with 11 questions in which 7 questions carries 1 mark each and 4 questions carry 2 marks each. It is common to all candidates.

Any two of XE sections from B – H: It is having 22 questions in which 9 questions carrying 1 mark and 13 questions carrying 2 marks.

10 Questions from General Aptitude (GA).

Exam Pattern for XL ( Life Sciences):

Section P: It consists of 15 questions in which 5 questions consists of 1 mark and 10 questions of 2 marks each.

Any two of XL sections from Q to U: It consists of 20 questions in which 10 questions consists of 1 mark and 10 questions consists of 2 marks each.

Preparation Tips

preparationStudents need to follow some instructions right from preparation to end of exam and these instructions are called tips. Let’s look at some of the tips that students need to follow during preparation of exams.

  • Students who are willing to pursue B. Tech courses in Manipal University should look for the notification, study the notification carefully and then apply for the examination.
  • Fill the application form carefully without any mistakes within the due date and then start preparing for exams.
  • Go through the syllabus and classify the subjects for preparation. First practice the subjects in which you find difficulty and next the easy ones.
  • Spend more time for difficult subjects and take more practice for those subjects. Be in contact with lecturers to clarify your doubts.
  • Prepare all model papers either by downloading or buying books. More practice helps the students to attain good score in the exam.
  • Download the hall ticket and keep it safe with you until the completion of examination. Don’t misplace it.
  • Time management is very important in examination. So it is good to attempt the known questions and later tough questions.
  • Don’t spend more time on unknown questions. Sometimes we need to answer the questions logically. So think and answer carefully.
  • Don’t commit any malpractice during the time of examination. You will get debarred and will not be allowed to attend for these examinations and this leads to spoil your life.

Model Papers

Cut Off

TestingGATE cut off is depends upon the factors like number of applicants, number of available seats, difficulty level of GATE paper and previous year’s cut-off.

Hall Ticket

Hall ticket or Admit card is an important credential to be carried during the examination. It is generated two weeks before the examination. Candidates should download and carry it for the examination. If not, the candidate may not be eligible to write the examination.

Step 3:  Click the “submit” button.

Step 4:  GATE admit card downloading link will be displayed on the screen.
